- Q. What does "Yosakoi" mean?
A."Yosakoi" is from "Yo"(Night) "Sa"(at) "Koi"(Come). This means "Come at night" or "Come tonight".
- Q. When and how did Yosakoi Festival begin?
A. Yosakoi Festival begun to encourage economies in Kochi after WWII by Kochi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 69th anniversary this year (2022). At that time people danced pure Japanese style Bon-Odori (Bon dancing, a traditional dance which is performed at the summer Bon period), however Rock'n roll or Samba style became popular these days and many young people participate.
- Q. Where can I see the Yosakoi festival?
A. Kochi is the main city of this festival. It is held for four days from Aug.9 to Aug.12 every year. Also you can see at Yosakoi Soran Festival in Sapporo, Hokkaido (June), Harajuku Omotesando Genki Matsuri Super Yosakoi in Harajuku, Tokyo (August) or Yosakoi Tokaido in Numazu, Shizuoka (November).
- Q. How can I participate the Yosakoi festival?
A. If you would like to participate on the festival day, you can go to "Kochi Citizens Principal Promoting Association" team or "Attaka Kochi Dancing Team". If you participate the former team, you will be supplied Happi. Please prepare Naruko that is available at stores nearby. After practicing dance for about 30 minutes, you will be at Otesuji street and dancing.
